Kern Valley SERT Graduation

LAKE ISABELLA, CA - On May 8th, 2008, at 6:00 pm, Kern Valley High School is graduating the first class of SERT trained students in Kern County. Student Emergency Response Team is based on the widely endorsed Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.

SERT empowers students with basic hazard skills and engages students in their school and community.
Students participate in disaster drills to demonstrate and practice life-saving skills they have learned.

SERT is taught to these students through the Employment Career in
Health Occupations (ECHO) class with assistance from the Kern Valley
CERT team. The SERT course includes the following basics:
§ Basic fire suppression
§ Disaster medical operations
§ Search and rescue
§ CERT organization
§ How to work and function as a cohesive team

These skills will allow the students to help professional first
responders in the event of a large scale disaster, help triage patients,
and to search a lightly damaged building if called upon by trained
professionals.

Thanks to the efforts of Kern Valley High School and Kern Valley CERT,
there are now many more citizens trained to assist their community in
the event of a disaster and can help their community in whatever need
may arise.
