The girl has been identified by the coroner's office as Nancy T. Medina age 17 of Bakersfield. According to the Shafter Police Department the incident is considered at this time to be a felony hit-and-run.

A driver on Lerdo Highway near Highway 99 reported that a body was on the road at about 1:20 a.m. She was taken .to Kern Medical Center at 2 a.m., said Greg Williams with the California Highway Patrol. She died at about 5:30 a.m. from her injuries

According to investigators Medina left her Oildale home with a male companion at 1 a.m..

Medina's sister said Nancy left voluntarily with the male companion, but she called later saying she was alone and didn't know where she was, Williams said.

Officers have issued a bulletin seeking to find the male companion,
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Shafter Police at 746-6341.
