7:55 am, homicide suspect ANDREW QUINTON HERNANDEZ escaped from custody.HERNANDEZ was being transported to Kern Medical Center for a blood draw. HERNANDEZ' charges made him a high risk inmate and he was transported to KMC by two deputies (Detention Deputy GERMAN and Deputy CASTANEDA). HERNANDEZ was transported in a transportation van while wearing waist and leg shackles.

HERNANDEZ had a handcuff key he obtained (by unknown means). HERNANDEZ was able to escape from his leg and waist shackles.

When the deputies opened the rear door of the transportation van, HERNANDEZ pushed past the deputies and fled. HERNANDEZ ran into the neighborhood south of the hospital.

Detention Deputy GERMAN notified the communitcations center of the situation. Three (3) bike patrol
deputies were in the area (Deputies RYAN SORROW, ALFRED JUAREZ, and ROGER DIXON). They set
up a perimeter based on GERMAN'S information. Within a very short time (1 1/2 to 2 minutes), the bike
patrol had HERNANDEZ back in custody.

HERNANDEZ had fled to the 1900 block of Quincy Street. HERNANDEZ had forced entry into an apartment and tried to hide there. HERNANDEZ refused to comply with deputies' orders to come out peacefully.

An electronic control device (taser)was used to assist in taking HERNANDEZ into custody.

There were no injuries to HERNANDEZ, deputies, or the occupants of the apartment.

HERNANDEZ had been arrested for numerous charges. One of the charges was for homicide.
