Due to the generosity of a local family of alumni, California State University, Bakersfield had the distinct pleasure, late yesterday afternoon, to launch the CSUB marquee. The marquee has been donated by the Dean and Adah Gay family who understand the importance of communicating University information to the local community.
The CSUB electronic marquee is an integral part of the university’s communications and marketing efforts, and will be used to announce and promote key university messages and activities to a broad external audience. Its location at the northern most point of the CSUB campus on Stockdale Highway gives the marquee optimal exposure.
When asked about their choice for the gift, David Gay stated, “Both Dean and Adah, our parents, were teachers at Standard School who highly valued education. Our family is pleased to honor them and give back to the community and especially CSUB. We hope this marquee will encourage the community to become more involved with the University.”
The University values the Gay family for their continued support and for making this remarkable addition to our campus a reality. “This marquee offers an immediate avenue for us to communicate with the public in an effective and efficient manner. We are extremely pleased to accept this amazing gift,” states Beverly Byl, Vice President for University Advancement/Executive Director CSUB Foundation.
For more information regarding marquee content, please contact the CSUB Office of Public Affairs at (661) 654-3209.CSUB Launched Electronic Marquee Thanks to the Gay Family

Shafter crop duster Alfred Fredrick Goss, 68, was killed Wednesday when his 75-year-old World War II airplane crashed in a field west of Bakersfield. Another man, Steven Dean Ballard, 54, of Anchorage, also was killed.
Goss was an air racing enthusiast who was National Champion in his class at the Reno Air Races in 2004. He was a popular pilot at local air shows, usually flying in the same AT-6 Texan plane that crashed Wednesday.
Story From KGET Ch 17
It happened at about 11:34 a.m. Witnesses said the single-engine propeller plane used to train pilots in World War II was doing maneuvers when it suddenly crashed without warning.
There were no injuries on the ground. The crash site is in farm fields about 20 miles due west of downtown Bakersfield, and is just south of the Frito Lay plant on Highway 58.
Crews from the Kern County Fire Department and the Sheriff’s Department were at the crash site. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board began their investigation Wednesday afternoon.

S
tudents at Olive Knolls Christian School love making a difference in the lives of others.
They proved this recently by helping kids diagnosed with cancer. OKCS teamed up with School Youth Programs and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s program ”Pennies for Patients”. This was their first year in participating in the program and the students loved it, and became very active in raising money to help the families with the care of their child and to find a cure.
My heart was warmed to see the excitement the students had in helping these families and the generous donations that helped make this fundraiser a huge success. A huge thank you goes out to those that matched what individual classrooms raised: Frye Construction, INC., Grijalva Builders and Cheapska8ter.com, and Vineyard Engineering, INC… Along with accepting donations and collecting change in the classrooms, our school used one “sticky” way to help raise money.
Our principal, Suzanne Hunter, was a great sport and agreed to be taped to a bench. This is how it worked: For the 3 weeks of our Fundraiser, we sold “Stuck A Buck” tickets for $1.00 and for every ticket purchased you received one foot of duct tape. We used over 100 feet to stick her to the bench. The students really enjoyed seeing their principal stuck for over an hour. Olive Knolls Christian School was able to raise over $1000 for this special program and can’t wait to help next year!! Way to go OKCS!!
