Jam Downs Skyforce

Sioux Falls, S.D. January 15, 2011 – The Bakersfield Jam defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce 126-100 at the Sioux Falls Arena on Saturday night. Bakersfield outscored Sioux Falls 65-34 in the second half to break open a tight game in Duane Ticknor’s first game as interim head coach.

Sioux Falls (2-17) came out strong in their first home game since Christmas Night and led by as many as 11 points (61-50) with just over two minutes to play in the opening half. Bakersfield (13-9) closed the gap to 63-61 but Anthony Harris swished a shot from beyond halfcourt at the halftime buzzer to give the Skyforce a 66-61 lead.

NBA Development League leading scorer Trey Johnson took over in the third quarter as he scored 20 points on 10-of-12 field goals to give the Jam a 94-86 lead heading into the final stanza. Bakersfield made 6-of-9 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach and send Sioux Falls to their 12th straight loss.

Johnson scored a game-high 34 points on 16-of-23 field goals. Brandon Wallace scored 20 points behind 6-of-8 3-pointers to go along with eight rebounds. Marqus Blakely added 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Harris scored a season-high 26 points and Maureece Rice posted 22 in his home debut. Cory Underwood also had a solid home debut with 13 points and six rebounds in a reserve role.

Men’s Swimming-CSUB Earns Votes; Hosts UCSD Saturday

Chad McKenzie is 1-of-9 CSUB Seniors swimming in their final home meet Jan. 15 CSU Bakersfield Sports Information

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.–The CSUB Men’s Swimming team received four points in the latest TYR/CSCAA Division I Poll released this week. The Roadrunners are 60 away from breaking into the top 25 and would be considered 42nd in the poll.

“Since we haven’t competed since the last meet was issued, this is a credit to our team,” said CSUB Head Coach Chris Hansen.

The complete poll can be found at the following; http://www.collegeswimming.com/poll1/

The Roadrunners return to the pool on Saturday for the first time since defeating Cal Baptist 175-118.5 Dec. 18. CSUB hosts hosts UC-San Diego in the Hillman Aquatics Center at 1 p.m. The Tritons are ranked sixth in the current TYR/CSCAA Division II Poll. Six CSUB senior swimmers will be honored before the meet.

“UCSD is a great team,” Hansen said. “We have to be on our game to make up the 32-0 deficit that we will have due to the diving competition (CSUB does not have a diver on the roster). Saturday is a bittersweet day as we honor our senior in their final home dual.”

ROADRUNNERS (8–8) vs. UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO (10–6)

VANDAL VARIA
The Vandals come to Rabobank Arena red hot, having won 4 in a row and 5 of their last 6 games…are coming off a 72–67 win over Nevada…like CSUB, Idaho shoots well from the perimeter, connecting on 38 percent from beyond the arc…the Vandals are insanely balanced on offense, with 5 players averaging between 9.2 and 10.9 points per game…Jr. G Deremy Geiger leads that quintet at 10.9 ppg…So. C Kyle Barone adds 10.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg…Sr. G Shawn Henderson is Idaho’s top rebounder at 5.6 rpg.

SERIES HISTORY

* This will be the first meeting between the Tigers and ’Runners in men’s basketball.
* The Vandal women topped CSUB 69–59 at the Univ. of Oregon Tournament on Nov. 28 this season.

WHEN LAST WE MET: This will be the first meeting between CSUB and Idaho in men’s basketball. CSUB and Idaho have no common history in men’s sports competition. The all–time athletics series between the Roadrunners and Vandals is tied at 2–2. CSUB is 2–0 in women’s soccer while Idaho is 2–0 in women’s basketball.

RACE FOR NO. 1 IN 3s: Junior guard Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) began the new year in a tie for first among all NCAA Division I players. Playing just one game in the last week, he dropped back to No. 2 in the latest NCAA Division I national rankings.

Johnson entered this week ranked No. 3 nationally in three–pointers made per game (3.4) and No. 22 in three–point field goal percentage (45.1). His seven treys in the Dec. 7 win over Idaho State and Dec. 22 win over UCR rank No. 10 in NCAA Division I play this season.

BOMBS AWAY: The ’Runners entered the week as one of the nation’s most dangerous perimeter teams, connecting on 40.1 percent (105–262) from beyond the arc through 15 games, a mark that ranked 18th in Division I this season. It would rank No. 3 all–time in CSUB history (45.1 in 1987) and No. 1 in CSUB’s Division I era (35.0 in 2008).

BOMBS AWAY II: The ’Runners matched their NCAA Division I record for three–pointers made in a game (No. 2 all–time) when they buried 14 treys in the win over UC Riverside on Dec. 22. Ironically, they hit that mark the first time in a win over UC Riverside in 2007 on — you guessed it — Dec. 22.

SINGLE ENGINE BOMBER: Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) has been the most prolific bomber in the CSUB squadron this season, draining nearly half (52) of the team’s 107 three–pointers.

A NEW WEAPON IN THE ARSENAL: Junior guard Robert Hayes (San Diego/San Francisco State) is providing a new weapon to the CSUB aerial assault. Hayes drained four of his five three point attempts at New Mexico last week as part of his season–high 16–point effort. For the season, Hayes is now 9–of–16 from beyond the arc.

MISSILE COMMAND: While it’s been bombs away for the CSUB offense, the CSUB defense has been stalwart in its ability to protect against the long–range attack. The ’Runner defense has been ranked nationally most of the season in three–point defense, and holds opponents to just 30.3 percent from beyond the arc this season.

BAKERSFIELD .500: The ’Runners enter Saturday’s game against Idaho with an 8–8 record. This is the latest in a season the Roadrunners have been at or above .500 since finishing the 2007 season 15–14.

THIRTYSOMETHING: Already the only player to score 30 points in a game in CSUB’s NCAA Division I era, sophomore guard Stephon Carter became the first CSUB player in more than a decade to reach 30 points twice in the same season when he hung 30 on Portland State Dec. 15. Carter also scored 32 points in an 82–77 win over San Jose State on Nov. 24.

Prior to Carter’s efforts this season, no Roadrunner had reached the 30–point plateau since Terri Miller scored 34 points against Central Washington on Dec. 28, 2002.

SAVAGE ON THE REBOUND: Just as Carter is making his mark on the CSUB scoring charts, junior forward Rashad Savage (Philadelphia/Odessa JC) is doing the same thing on the Roadrunner rebounding charts. Savage grabbed 17 boards in the win over Portland State. While 17 is a healthy number, it was four rebounds shy of Santwon Latunde’s 21–rebound game against Loyola Marymount last season. Latunde’s mark tied the school record set three times previously and is CSUB’s Division I era record.

Savage entered this week’s play ranked No. 13 nationally with a 10.7 rebounds per game average. He has led CSUB in rebounding in all 15 games this season, reaching double figures nine times in the process.

GIVE THESE LADS A HAND: The ’Runners showed great ball movement in their Dec. 22 win over UC Riverside, posting a team season–high 23 assists. The 23 dimes were CSUB’s most ever at the NCAA Division I level, eclipsing the previous high of 22 assists in a 98–64 win over LMU on Jan. 7, 2008.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: Although they encountered a little turbulence in their game at New Mexico, committing a season–high 22 turnovers, the ’Runners have done a secure job taking care of the basketball. Prior to that, CSUB averaged just 10.9 turnovers per game over its previous nine contests. Its 13.1 turnovers per game over the first 16 games of the season would translate to its lowest rate at the NCAA Division I level.

BANK ROBBERS: While the ’Runners jealously guard the ball, they have no qualms about taking it away from their foes, especially in Rabobank Arena. CSUB collected a season–high 14 steals against Portland State and 12 more against Cal State Northridge on Dec. 18. The ’Runners average 7.4 steals per game.

WHAT A STEAL: Stephon Carter (Garces HS) has been CSUB’s leading pickpocket this season. With three more steals at Pacific, Carter ran his streak of consecutive games with a steal to 26 dating back to last season. He owns a team–leading 37 for the season and 87 over his one season plus 16 games at the collegiate level. Those steals put him in 12th place on the CSUB career list. He is two steals away from catching Dock Ellis for 10th place. If he keeps up his current pace, he will end his sophomore season No. 6 all–time with 115 steals. His 2.3 steals per game average in 2010–11 ranked No. 26 in NCAA Division I play entering the week.

BROWN ON THE BLOCKS: Senior big man Cory Brown (Lakeside/El Capitan HS) set a personal career high with five blocks in the Dec. 18 win over Cal State Northridge. That mark is No. 4 all–time at CSUB and No. 1 in the NCAA Division I era, eclipsing his previous best of four set versus Utah Valley on Jan. 31, 2009. He added another block in Tuesday’s game at Pacific to bring his career total to 68, easing him past Troy Price and Kebu Stewart for sole possession of fifth place. Next up is Victor Green in fourth place with 73 blocks. If he maintains his current pace, Brown will finish his career No. 4 all–time at CSUB with 80 career blocks.

For the record, Jamal Livingston is the all–time leader, needing just two seasons in blue and gold (1999–00) to collect 107 blocks.

LEADER OF THE PACK: In its Dec. 7 win over Idaho State, CSUB built its second–biggest lead in a game (34 points) since joining the NCAA Division I ranks. The only time the ’Runners led by more was a 36–point spread in what would become a 98–64 win over Loyola Marymount on Jan. 7, 2008.

KEEPING IT ON THE DOWN LOW: The 75–56 win over Idaho State on Dec. 7 was to be expected given CSUB’s solid defensive effort. They’ve won their last 10 games when holding opponents to 60 or fewer points. Including the Dec. 18 70–69 win over Cal State Northridge, the ’Runners have won 20 of their last 31 when holding an opponent under 70.

LIVING IN THE 80’s: With a youthful, more athletic team this season, the ’Runners are averaging 72.3 points per game, their highest average so far as an NCAA Division I program. With that should come more 80–plus point efforts like Dec. 22nd’s 89–80 win over UC Riverside. Those have been a rarity for Div. I CSUB. It was just the eighth time that CSUB scored 80 points in a home game at the Division I level. It was just the fourth time that Division I CSUB scored 80 points and won (the others: 92–77 over Portland State on Dec. 15; 82–77 over San Jose State on Nov. 24 and 98–64 over Loyola Marymount on Jan. 7, 2008).

AND DYING IN THE 80’s: While 80–point offensive games have generally been a good sign for CSUB, 80–point defensive efforts have be harbingers of doom. By allowing 80 points to UC Riverside and winning on Dec. 22, CSUB snapped 0–32 streak at the NCAA Division I level when allowing 80 or more points. The ’Runners had gone 0–34 overall when allowing 80 or more points before the win over UCR. Their previous win in such a game was a 90–87 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Feb. 25, 2006.

With last week’s 102–62 loss at New Mexico, CSUB is now 1–34 at the Division I level when allowing 80 or more points.

A HALF NOTE: For the first time since last Feb. 3, the ’Runners put together two halves to make one victory in the Dec. 4 win over San Francisco. They led at halftime, 38–31. By then winning the second half, 39–38, the ’Runners won both halves of a game for the first time since defeating UC Irvine last February. It marks only the second time they have pulled that off in the last 57 games—despite having 20 victories over that run.

THE OTHER HALF NOTE: Oddly, the ’Runners won at Sacramento State on Nov. 14 despite not winning either half. That’s because the game was tied at both the half and, of course, at the end of regulation.

WE MEET AGAIN: The Roadrunners entered 2010–11 with a 133–122 record all–time versus this season’s opponents. Note that many of those games were played while both CSUB and their respective foes were competing at the NCAA Division II level.

39 YEARS OF CSUB BASKETBALL: The 2010–2011 season marks the 40th anniversary of Roadrunner men’s basketball at CSUB. Since the program’s inception in 1971–72, the Roadrunners have posted an impressive all–time record of 760–378 (.668).

LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT: The CSUB Athletics program successfully completed its five–year transition to active NCAA Division I status in August. All Roadrunner teams are now fully postseason eligible at the Division I level.

JAM SPREADS IT AROUND AT 2011 NBA D-LEAGUE SHOWCASE

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TEXAS, Jan. 12, 2011 – If jam could jiggle, the late Chick Hearn would have had a field day.

After stretching its lead to 15 points at the start of the fourth quarter, Bakersfield (12-8) pushed it to as many as 23, before settling for a 105-93 victory over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the opening game of Day 3 action at the 2011 NBA D-League Showcase.

It was a balanced diet for the Jam, with six players scoring at least 13 points, led by 18 from Derrick Byars. Trey Johnson, the NBA D-League’s leading scorer at 25.1 ppg, finished with 15 points and six rebounds for Bakersfield, while Jeremy Wise added 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

“They seemed pretty focused on trying to limit my offense, but I’m not just a scorer, I’m a basketball player, and I’ll look to get my teammates involved,” said Johnson, who had a brief stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008-09 season. “I think for me to get back to the NBA, I just have to continue to do what I’m doing, which is taking the scoring when it’s there but also helping get others involved.”

Johnson’s mid-range game is extremely advanced, and he’s worked to become a more complete player since going undrafted in 2007 out of Jackson State. He’s a little undersized to play the two full-time in the NBA, but his ability to put the ball in the basket can’t be ignored.

Walker Russell paced Fort Wayne (12-9) with a game-high 25 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. The Mad Ants were aggressive throughout, as evidenced by 37 free throw attempts and forcing 24 turnovers, but ultimately done in by 38 percent shooting from the field.

Fort Wayne played its second and final game of the 2011 NBA D-League Showcase. Bakersfield returns to action tomorrow against Austin.

Head Coach Tim La Kose Earns 200th Win as CSUB Tops WSU ’Runners Cruise to 72–58 Win Over Weber State to Give La Kose 200th Win at CSUB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Roadrunners started 2011 off with a bang as they cruised to a 72–58 win over the visiting Wildcats of Weber State on Monday night. The victory marked head coach Tim La Kose’s 200th (200–82, overall) victory at the helm of the CSUB program.

CSUB (11–9) came out flying as they went on an 18–4 run to open up the first half. A string of three–pointers from the likes of guards, sophomore Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS), junior Kristine Herman (San Ramon, Calif./Florida Gulf Coast) and senior Britney McGee (Bakersfield, Calif./Univ. of Albany), put the ’Runners up by 15 with a little over ten minutes remaining.

Weber State (4–8) silenced the CSUB scoring for a brief period, hitting three consecutive shots from behind the arc. The Wildcats cut the lead down to nine points with three minutes remaining, however, Williams and McGee combined for a 5–0 run to give the ’Runners a 14–point lead (34–20) at the break.

Freshman guard Tyonna Outland (Compton, Calif./Lynwood HS) hit a deep three from behind the arc to get the second half started, while Williams contributed another, giving CSUB its largest lead of the night at 18–points just two minutes in.

Despite being down by double–digits most of the game, the Wildcats mounted a come back attempt and used a 9–0 run of their own to cut the deficit back down to nine. Weber State managed to get to lead down to eight points three different times through a two–minute span, thanks to back–to–back buckets from Mariah Metoyer, however, McGee and Williams went back to their three–point ways to earn CSUB a double–digit lead once again.

Weber State hit several treys in the closing minutes but they weren’t enough to overcome the Roadrunners lead. Three Wildcats finished in double–figure scoring while Weber State also outrebounded CSUB.

McGee totaled a CSUB career–high 22 points to lead all players as she went an impressive 4–6 from three–point range. Williams put up a 20–point performance, going 4–7 from behind the arc, and Outland added 11.

Senior guard Nikki Leon (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon HS) grabbed a game–high nine rebounds while also contributing six points.

With the win, head coach Tim La Kose earned his 200th victory at the helm of the CSUB program. La Kose is just the second head coach in the Roadrunners’ ten–year history and he became the sixth coach of any sport in CSUB history to reach the 200 mark.

The ’Runners continue their three–game home stand to open the New Year as they host Concordia University, Irvine on Friday, January 7. Tip–off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Icardo Center.

CSU Bakersfield CLinches MPSF Tournament Berth Shannon’s Saves Earn CSUB MPSF Championship Berth

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –  The CSUB men’s soccer team took the first step on the road to the postseason Sunday, and they took that step with the hands of goalkeeper Eric Shannon (Valencia HS).

Shannon made a career–high 10 saves to allow the Roadrunners to escape from Albuquerque with a scoreless draw against Mountain Division leader New Mexico. Shannon earned his seventh clean sheet of the season, matched his career–high by making his 62nd save of the season and lowered his goals against average to 0.74.

The tie keeps CSUB (9–3–3, 4–0–3 MPSF) as the lone unbeaten team in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. New Mexico moves to 7–4–3 and 4–2–1.

Combined with other results around the conference Sunday, the tie clinches a berth in the MPSF tournament for CSUB. The Roadrunners are the only team to clinch a berth so far.

“Getting four points on this road trip was huge,” says CSUB Assistant Coach Brad Williams. “Eric stepped up big on Friday (in a 2–1 win at UNLV) and he was huge again today, making some big saves to help us earn the draw.”

Shannon made his biggest stop with time winding down in the second overtime period. New Mexico’s Michael Green took a pass in the box and hit a dangerous volley that Shannon parried out of danger for his 10th and final save.

“It doesn’t get any bigger than the save Eric made at the end to keep it scoreless,” says Williams.

CSUB had its best chance to score at the end of regulation when junior midfielder Richard Menjivar (Panorama City/University of Evansville) carried the ball nearly half the field to create a one–on–one chance against Lobo keeper Justin Holmes. But Holmes came out and took the ball off Menjivar’stouch to prevent the shot that almost earned the Roadrunners all three points in dramatic fashion.

Eric Shannon made a career-high 10 saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season Sunday in New Mexico. CSU Bakersfield Sports Information

The Roadrunners hold an eight–point lead in the Pacific Division race on both Sacramento State and Seattle with nine points still in play. Winning the division would earn the ’Runners a first round bye in the MPSF Tournament.

CSUB returns to the friendly confines of the Main Soccer Field to play its final three regular season matches, beginning Friday against Denver at 5 p.m. The ’Runners also host Air Force (Oct. 29) and Seattle (Nov. 7) before heading to the MPSF Championship Tournament in Sacramento Nov. 11–14.

Cross Country Tunes Up For Regionals With 3rd Place Finish In Fullerton

Head Coach Robert Boyles got his team ready for the NCAA Division I West Regionals with a strong third place showing at Fullerton. CSU Bakersfield Sports Information

FULLERTON, Calif. – The 2010 CSU Bakersfield cross country team made its final tune–up before the NCAA Division I Regionals a good one, finishing third at the Titan Invitational on the Cal State Fullerton campus.

Senior Arianna Celis (Perris/Riverside CC) continues to lead the way for CSUB, finishing fifth overall in 17:40.0. The Roadrunners also got top 20 finishes from senior Casey Glassey (Loma Linda/Riverside CC) and sophomore Cecilia Lopez (North HS) who placed 16th and 18th respectively in 18:17.8 and 18:24.8.

“We finished third and got personal best 5K times from Ari, Cecilia and Monica Guzman,” says CSUB Head Coach Robert Boyles, “so obviously I’m very pleased with these results and where we are headed into regionals.”

Azusa Pacific took first place overall with 46 points. Loyola Marymount (80) finished second and CSUB (94) placed third. Cal Baptist (106), Cal State L.A. (108), USC (146) and UCLA (151) rounded out the top seven.

Without a conference championship meet in which to compete, this was the Roadrunners’ final tune-up before heading to the NCAA Division I West Regionals in three weeks. It will be the first Division I regional appearance for the CSUB cross country program.

“Everything we’ve done has been about getting ready for Oregon and the regional,” says Boyles. “Since we don’t have a conference, this was our meet to get ready and I think we are on track for where we need to be. This was a really, really good day for us.”

The ’Runners will head to Eugene, Ore. and the University of Oregon for the NCAA Division I regionals to be held Nov. 13. It will be CSUB’s first NCAA postseason appearance since earning active Division I status earlier this summer.
